WASHINGTON -- As he nears the end of his rookie season, Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler has talked lately about being tired. On Saturday night, he made the Washington Nationals look listless. Wheeler pitched effectively into the seventh inning and New York piled up a season-high 17 hits in routing the Nationals 11-3. Wheeler (7-3) allowed two runs and five hits in 6 2-3 innings, striking out three and walking one. Since the start of July, the touted rookie is 6-2 with a 2.96 ERA. "Because hes throwing strikes," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "Hes not trying to strike people out. With the great arm that he had, people were looking for that and I think when he got up here he thought he had to do that." Eric Young Jr., Daniel Murphy, Josh Satin and Juan Lagares had three hits apiece for New York, which scored 11 runs for the second time in three days and won its third straight. The news wasnt all good for the injury-riddled Mets, though. Ike Davis left with a strained muscle on his right side after hitting a sacrifice fly in the third, and Collins said the first baseman is probably done for the season. The Nationals, who dropped 7 1/2 games behind Cincinnati for the second NL wild card, have lost the first two games of the series. Denard Span had three hits for Washington, extending his hitting streak to 14 games. Dan Haren (8-12) allowed seven runs and nine hits in 2 2-3 innings, his shortest start of the season. The Mets have won 10 of Wheelers 14 starts, and he improved to 5-0 with a 2.19 ERA on the road. Wheeler allowed two runs in the sixth but went back out for the seventh, getting the first two outs before he gave up a single and was pulled after 99 pitches. "(I) also know what hes saying about getting a little tired," Collins said. "Hes the one who came in after the sixth inning and said he wanted to go back out there. I said, Then stop telling everybody youre tired, and you will get back out there." Wheeler responded, "My (velocity) is not up so obviously Im a little tired, but once you get out there and get going, you dont even know about it." The win was tempered by the loss of Davis, who was demoted to the minors in June. Now, hes likely headed to the disabled list. "I doubt we see him," Collins said. "I feel terrible for Ike. He went to the minor leagues. He worked very hard on some things. Came back, started to see some signs . and 2013s going to go down as a real frustrating year for Ike Davis." Davis hit .290 (20 for 69) in August. Haren, who had been pitching well since a stint on the DL, has given up 11 earned runs over 9 2-3 innings in his last two starts. "I tried to battle, but it seemed like everything they put in play was a hit," Haren said. The Mets got two in the second. With one out, Travis dArnaud and Lagares singled. After Haren fanned Matt den Dekker, Omar Quintanilla hit a drive to right-centre just beyond the reach of a diving Span for a two-run double. In the third, the Mets sent 11 batters to the plate. Young led off with a single, stole second and scored on a single by Murphy. With Murphy running, Satin singled to left, putting runners on first and third. Davis drove in Murphy with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0. After dArnaud singled, Lagares singled to right, and Jayson Werths throw to the plate cut down Satin. But den Dekker followed with his first major league hit, a single that scored dArnaud and ended Harens night. Consecutive walks, the second one to Wheeler, forced in a run, and Young capped the inning with a two-run single to make it 8-0. "Everything that could go wrong in the second and third inning did," Nationals manager Davey Johnson said. Washington got two back in the sixth on Werths sacrifice fly and Ian Desmonds RBI single. NOTES: Lucas Duda replaced Davis at first base. New York also is missing All-Star third baseman David Wright, closer Bobby Parnell and several starting pitchers due to injuries -- including young ace Matt Harvey. ... Desmond added his 34th double of the season, a career high. ... Johnson was back in the dugout one night after leaving in the fourth inning due to dehydration. ... Johnson said he would speak to Bryce Harper regarding Harper not hustling after hitting a grounder to second in the eighth inning of Friday nights 3-2 loss. Johnson added that Harper might be favouring his left knee, which he injured earlier this year. Harper missed 31 games due to bursitis in the knee and Johnson said minor off-season surgery to remove a bursa sac is an option. ... Young stole a base for the fourth straight game. ... We have five in it. Sir Des Champs is Gigginstowns so I dont know what Bryan (Cooper, their retained rider) is doing, Walsh told At The Races.Weve Ballycasey, Turban, Boston Bob and On His Own. Id imagine Patrick (Mullins) will ride On His Own.They are five long-shots and any of them, on their best day, could run a big race, but whether their best days are behind them or not now is questionable. After enjoying a superb Cheltenham Festival with seven winners, Mullins is a serious contender to being crowned champion trainer in the UK for the first time to add to his many Irish title triumphs.ddddddddddddA strong raiding party including Champion Hurdle heroine Annie Power and the brilliant Vautour is likely to be in action at Aintree next week and Walsh believes just being in with a chance of being British champion is a massive achievement for Mullins.Even to be in with a chance of winning it is incredible and youve seen how much money he has amassed here in Ireland as well, said the jockey. He is a brilliant trainer, hes a gentleman to work for and it would be a massive achievement, but hes very good at putting his horses in the right races.Doing that is a huge thing and Willie is brilliant at it. DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Carlos Beltran homered for his first hit this spring, leading the New York Yankees past the Toronto Blue Jays 8-2 on Sunday. Jose Bautista hit his second homer in exhibition play for the Blue Jays. Beltrans solo home run came in the third off reliever Todd Redmond and landed far over the right-field fence. It capped a four-run inning that included a two-run homer by Eduardo Nunez. Beltran signed a three-year, $45 million contract with the Yankees in the off-season. He batted .296 with 24 homers and 84 RBIs with the St. Louis Cardinals last year. "You want to see guys swinging the bat well, obviously, but its really important at the end," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "It doesnt really matter sometimes. You can be swinging the bat horrible at the end of spring training and get off to a hot start and vice versa. But its always nice to see." Bautista connected off Vidal Nuno in the first. Nuno struck out three and gave up two hits in two innings. Toronto starter Esmil Rogers tossed two innings and allowed an earned run. The right-hander gave up three hits and struck out one. Jose Reyes, Edwin Encarnacion, Melky Cabrera and Adam Lind each doubled for the Blue Jays. Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter did not play. STARTING TIME Blue Jays: Rogers threw 36 pitches and worked almost-exclusively on his changeup, which he said is progressing well. "Thats what I was working for," Rogers said. "Down in the Dominican (Republic) during winter ball, I worked on my changeup and now I feel more comfortable. I got it before. The only reason is I didnt have too much confidence to throw that. Right now, I can throw anything I want." Rogers was 5-9 with a 4.77 ERA in 44 games with the Blue Jays last season. He is a candidate for the fifth spot in the rotation. Yankees: Nuno said he felt as if he "got a little happy with the fastball," which led to Bautistas home run. Nuno, who is a contender for the fifth spot in the rotation, appeared in five games with the Yankees last season and made three starts. He finished 1-2 with a 2.25 ERA. "Overall, Im just pleased a little bit with how the outcome came," he said. "It was just one pitch and Bautista just hit it out. Location was good and everything. (My fastball) just got overused a little bit and I wasnt using my secondary (pitches) like I was supposed to do." TRAINERS ROOM Blue Jays: Colby Rasmus was scratched from Sundays lineup because of a stiff neck. Rasmus was set to bat seventh, but opted to sit as a precaution. He does not expect it to be a long-term issue and hopes to return in a "couple days." "I feel all right, I just woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning," Rasmus said. Anthony Gose took Rasmus place in centre field and was 0 for 3 with a strikeout. Manager John Gibbons said closer Casey Janssen had an MRI on his sore right shoulder, but it did not show any damage. "Its just inflamed," Gibbons said. "Theres a lot of wear and tear on a guy over the years. Hes smart, backed off and well give him a little breather. Theres still a full month (of spring training) left. Hell be ready to go." Janssen, who saved 34 games for the Blue Jays last season, said he plans to rest and start throwing again in a few days. Yankees: Girardi said first baseman Mark Teixeira, limited to 15 games last season because of a right wrist injury, might play in his first spring training game on Thursday or Friday. Alfonso Soriano, recovering from flu-like symptoms, went through a workout Sunday morning that included batting practice and defensive drills. The outfielder/designated hitter could play in his first exhibition game in the next few days. FIRE DRILL The Yankees dealt with a minor scare before the game when a towel inside of a dryer caught fire in the grounds crew clubhouse located next door to the teams clubhouse. Girardi joked that "it got a little smoky" and said some players evacuated. There was no reported damage or injuries. PINEDA PITCHES Yankees fifth starter candidate Michael Pineda, who missed the past two seasons after right shoulder surgery, threw 21 of 35 pitches for strikes in a simulated game. He faced 10 batters, allowing two hits, striking out one and walking his final two hitters. Pineda and Hiroki Kuroda are scheduled to pitch in Fridays game against the Tigers in Tampa. Nico Rosberg, coming off his win at the season-opening race in Australia, was fastest in the second session and overall with a time of 1 minute, 39.909 seconds around the Sepang International Circuit, exceeding Ferraris Kimi Raikkonen by three-hundredths of a second. Raikkonen, who struggled in Melbourne, was also second fastest in the morning session behind Rosbergs Mercedes teammate, Lewis Hamilton. Although Mercedes was expected to dominate the early races of the season, and did so in Australia, the top six cars on Friday afternoon were separated by just two-tenths of a second, indicating a competitive race on Sunday. "We are still having some small issues and therefore we were not able to maximize everything today," Rosberg said. "The quickest teams seem to be closer together than in Australia, so we still have work to do overnight to improve our level of performance." Defending four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel overcame some technical issues that restricted his running in the morning session and was an impressive third fastest in the afternoon, while his Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo was seventh. The bad news for Vettel was that he needed to change his computer power supply unit, which alternates the power source between the engine, the turbo and battery-stored energy. That means he is onto his third of the season, with a limit of five all year before penalties kick in. "Fridaay timings are not the most important in the world, but to be out there in the range with the other guys was a decent day," Vettel said.dddddddddddd. "It was not a completely smooth day for both of us; for myself, still some things to solve on the software side, programming the car, which sounds wrong but that is the way it is." Hamilton was fourth in the second session, ahead of Ferraris Fernando Alonso and Williams Felipe Massa. Hamilton is using the same engine that caused his early retirement from the Australian GP, with the team having fixed the misfire and preserved an engine which is also subject to the same five-per-season limit. McLarens Jenson Button was eighth quickest, ahead of Williams driver Valtteri Bottas and Force Indias Nico Hulkenberg. On a typically hot but dry day at Sepang, all drivers endured technical issues of some kind, ranging from the lack of downforce which caused several off-track excursions, high tire-wear from the consequent sliding, and fuel consumption issues with the new V6 turbo hybrid engines and the introduction of fuel usage limits. As in Melbourne, Lotus and Caterham were the teams to suffer most. Neither Lotus car completed a lap in the morning as the team continued to play catchup on its engine development after a strife-torn off-season. Pastor Maldonado sat out the afternoon too, and while Romain Grosjean made several trips out on track, he suffered repeated breakdowns. Caterhams Kamui Kobayashi had yet more problems with his energy-storage system, necessitating another replacement after two in Melbourne, meaning he is already closing in on the season limit. CARDIFF -- Wales second string proved too strong to Tonga as first-half tries by centres Owen Williams and Ashley Beck set up a scrappy 17-7 win for the Six Nations champions at Millennium Stadium on Friday. Wales coach Warren Gatland rested the majority of his first-choice players ahead of next weeks match against Australia and their replacements lacked the fluency to take full advantage of their dominance of possession in Cardiff. It was still relatively comfortable for the Welsh, though, with Williams taking Leigh Halfpennys pass and weaving through two tackles to score in the 15th minute and Beck finishing expertly in the left corner in the 24th after George North had made a hole in the Tongan defence. Halfpenny converted both tries and added a penalty, with Viliami Helus 33rd-minute try being Tongas only reply. We turned up for what ought to have been an orthodox days filming; Bangladesh training in the morning, the captains press conferences in the afternoon, then Englands final session before the series opener. We arrived already disrupted by heavy rain but we are used to this - we are from England after all - and it gave us a subject to gather some early shots; the wet weather, covers on the wicket, workmen diligently preparing the ground. Cameraman Dave Buxton went off to gather the footage and I set myself up in the press box. So far, so good. Business as usual. I then heard the sound of a helicopter hovering close by, which was in fact landing on the practice area outside, just behind me. It caught my attention, but I didnt think anything of it at first. Choppers fly over cricket grounds all the time at internationals. It could have been some visiting dignitary, I thought, but I had a look to see anyway. Bangladesh commandos disembarked from a hovering helicopter To my amazement, Bangladeshi military troops were abseiling from the hovering aircraft, dropping to the ground, guns-in-hand, and sprinting through the connecting tunnel onto the main playing surface. They were followed by a gaggle of local media and cameras, and all made their way to the dressing room area, the troops then firing off their guns and bringing out make-believe hostages (played by military colleagues) and led them back onto the practice ground, where the helicopter whisked them off into the Dhaka sky. England trained as usual after the military war game It was a public show of strength from security forces; warning how they would swing into action in the event of a real terrorist attack on the ground. It was dramatic to say the least and, fortunately all captured by our diligent caameraman Dave, who got great footage of the siege from a high vantage.ddddddddddddQuite the contrast to the more mundane images of ground staff removing surface water. Whatever else we got that day, these were the pictures and the story people wanted to see - a dramatic new edition to a week of armed guards at hotels and military-chauffeured drives through the capital. The next live broadcast to Sky Sports News HQ was a thrilling one to deliver. Security is always tight here, and troops a common sight, but this was a surreal experience at a cricket ground, just 24 hours before an international. Bangladesh fans have been grateful for Englands arrival in Dhaka England were not at the ground at the time. They were still back at the hotel preparing for afternoon practice, but I did get some reaction from the skipper Jos Buttler, who had seen our pictures on SSNHQ. Of course, he ultimately hoped it would never happen in reality, but it was a stark reminder of just how serious security around this fixture is.The captains final message, though, was lets get on with the cricket and, once in the ground, the security, soldiers, guns and hostage drills were forgotten about. The Bangladeshi people are wildly ecstatic about their cricket and every run, despite Englands victory, was cheered by a sell-out crowd. Watch NOW TV Watch Sky Sports for just £6.99. No contract. PITTSBURGH -- The star-studded, but dormant, Pittsburgh Penguins offence woke up just in time to snap a losing streak. James Neal and Brandon Sutter each had a goal and an assist, and the Penguins won for the first time in four games, 4-1 over the Nashville Predators on Friday night. Pittsburgh scored one goal in each game during the losing streak. The Penguins scored four times for the second time in their past 11 games in improving to 8-3 at home. "I think we had as many -- if not more -- chances last game and we couldnt find the back of the net, but tonight it felt good to get on the board," Neal said. "After we got the first goal, we started rolling and we didnt look back." Playing in his fourth game of the season because of an upper-body injury, Neal -- a former 40-goal scorer -- netted his first of the season late in the first period to give the Penguins a lead they didnt relinquish against the road-weary Predators. Nashville lost the final four of a franchise-record, 17-day, seven-game trip. Gabriel Bourque scored 2:28 in but the Predators were held to one or fewer goals for the fourth consecutive game. "This was just a frustrating game all the way around," said Predators centre Mike Fisher, who returned after missing four games because of a lower-body injury. "Weve got to be much better. Ive got to be much better, and weve got to find ways to score here. Its not acceptable." Pascal Dupuis and Kris Letang also scored, and Evgeni Malkin extended his point streak to six with two assists for Pittsburgh. Marc-Andre Fleury made 17 saves. The Penguins, who have held opponents under three goals in seven of eight games, had a 33-18 advantage in shots. "It was one of those games where we knew it was a matter of time," Dupuis said. "We were going to play the 60 minutes the way we wanted to play. Thats what it looked like tonight." Nashville, which entered 7-0-2 when scoring first, couldnt take advantage of an early lead given. Bourque shoved a puck past Fleury after it had deflected off of Malkins stick and Penguins defenceman Olli Maattas skate after Kevin Kleins shot from the point. Bourque, who scored his second of the season, missed Nashvilles previous game because of the birth of his first child. That lead lasted just 10 minutes before Dupuis and Neal scored 2:20 apart to put the Penguins in front in the first period. "The guys played an awesome game after that (Nashville goal)," Fleury said. "We dominated the game." Dupuis second of the season -- a rising slap shot from the top of the left circle off a set faceoff play -- came at 12:36, shortly after Nashville killed a penalty for too many men on the ice. But with the Predators Ryan Ellis off for interference minutes later, Neal got a piece of Malkins slap shot from the point while he stood in front of rookie goalie Marek Mazanec. The 22-year-old Mazanec made his NHL debut a week earlier and had his first career start Tuesday. He stopped 21 of 25 shots in two periods, and fellow rookie Carter Hutton played the third. Mazanec made a spectacular glove save on Neal early in the second period, but Letang made it 3-1 with his fourth of the season at 7:58. "Itll be good to get home," Fisher said. "Its always tough to come off a long roadie, but obviously were all looking forward to getting home. Thats the longest trip Ive ever had." After skipping the morning skate because of illness, Letang scored off a feed from Malkin. Sutter made it 4-1 with 1:23 left in the second. "The second (period), we really took over the game," Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma said. "Shift after shift, we played in the offensive zone." Nashvilles Eric Nystrom was knocked out of the game by a punch to the head during a fight with Tanner Glass late in the second period. Bloodied from a cut on his forehead, Nystrom needed assistance and wobbled to the dressing room. He didnt return to the game. The previous time Nystrom played against the Penguins on Feb. 29, 2012, he delivered a controversial hit to the head of Letang, and the Pittsburgh defenceman was out of the lineup for two weeks. Then with the Dallas Stars, Nystrom was given a roughing penalty but wasnt disciplined further by the NHL. Glass wasnt with the Penguins then. Nystrom wasnt available for comment after the game, but about an hour after it ended he tweeted, "All good folks. Got popped behind the earhole! Weird spot. Appreciate the concern n support!!" NOTES: Pirates manager Clint Hurdle received a long ovation when he was recognized on the video board for being named the National League manager of the year this week. After the game, he was in the Penguins locker room accompanying his young son, who was celebrating a birthday and collecting autographs. . Penguins D Paul Martin returned after missing two games because of a lower-body injury. . The game was the 600th for Penguins LW Chris Kunitz and the 200th for Pittsburgh D Deryk Engelland. . Instead, the goalie was called into action for the first time since suffering a concussion on Nov. 13 when starter Josh Harding was injured during the warm-up. Backstrom made a smooth transition, turning aside 37 shots in regulation and overtime before teammate Charlie Coyle scored the winner in the fourth round of the 3-2 shootout victory. "You have to be ready all the time and you never know whats going to happen so you have to find a way to be ready and be at your best," Backstrom said after picking up his second win of the season. Harding suffered a lower-body injury in warm-up after he slipped on a puck. Backstrom was returning from his first concussion, suffered after an elbow to the head by Nazem Kadri on Nov. 13 that led to the Toronto forward being suspended for three games. His first full practice was Friday. Wild backup netminder Darcy Kuemper was on his way to Iowa of the AHL, but was contacted at the Winnipeg airport and whisked to the MTS Centre to sit on the bench in case Backstrom needed relief. "He (Backstrom is) the difference in the game for us," Minnesota head coach Mike Yeo said. "I mean, obviously I give our players a great deal of credit for dealing with the adversity with what happened at the beginning of the game. Its a little bit easier to deal with it when you see your goalie go out and play the way that he was. "In the first period, we just werent good enough by any stretch and he kept us in it and gave a us a chance to continue to find our game and its a real credit to Backy." Minnesota moved to 15-5-4 and has won six of its past seven games and is 9-1-1 in November. The loss extended Winnipeg (10-11-4) winless streak to four games (0-2-2). It was the Jets eighth shootout of the season and third loss in the contest. Pavelec stopped 35 in regulation and overtime for Winnipeg. Aside from Coyle, who deked to beat Pavelec for his first career shootout goal and second attempt, Mikko Koivu also scored in the shootout. Bryan Little beat Backstrom for the Jets. Michael Frolik and Matt Halischuk each had a goal and assist for Winnipeg in regulation. Nino Niederreiter and Zach Parise scored for Minnesota, with Parises 11th of the season sending the gamme into overtime.dddddddddddd Parise added an assist and now has 12 points in his last 10 games. Jets coach Claude Noel said his team played a pretty good game against the surging Wild. "Theyve been the best team in the National Hockey League in the month of November," Noel said. "Its not been an easy task. Weve lost to them 2-1, 2-1 and now 3-2 in a shootout so were close, were getting there." This time, the back-breaker for the Jets came in the third period. Winnipeg was ahead 2-1 and it looked like the lead might be secure when Wild defenceman Marco Scandella was called for hooking at 14:02. But the short-handed situation was no challenge for the Wild. Ryan Suter, Mikko Koivu and Parise got on a 3-on-2 breakway and Parise fired a low shot past Pavelec with 4:48 remaining. "The puck got rimmed around, didnt quite make it to the defenceman and boom, they came back 3-on-2," Noel said. Pavelec thought his teammates played better, but was lamenting not getting two points. "The way we lost today, its disappointing," Pavelec said. "We had the game. We had it. We should close it up. We didnt and we lost the point." After a scoreless first period in which Winnipeg outshot the visitors 14-4, Frolik marked his sixth goal of the season late in the second when the Wild turned the puck over just outside their blue-line. Frolik got the puck and sent a pass to Halischuk, who fired high at Backstrom. The puck went into the air and then onto the ice near the crease, where Frolik was on the spot to flip it into the net at 13:07. Minnesota tied it up 1-1 at 3:21 of the third when Scandella took a pass from Parise and fired a shot from the high slot. Niederreiter got the rebound and put it past Pavelec. The Jets regained the lead just over two minutes later after Halischuk took advantage of his own rebound to score his second of the season. Winnipeg had four shots in overtime, with Wild winger Jason Zucker breaking up a 2-on-1 rush as Evander Kane was about to shoot and Devin Setoguchis low shot stopped by Backstrom. The Wild had one shot on net in overtime. Winnipeg embarks on a six-game road trip, beginning Monday in New Jersey. Minnesota finishes a four-game road trip in St. Louis on Monday. DAVIE, Fla. - The Dolphins recent offensive woes have come at a bad time for a team with fading playoff hopes, particularly with a trip to the New England Patriots up next on Sunday.Quarterback Ryan Tannehill has been under more duress from opposing pass rushers while his threat to throw deep has all but disappeared. The offence does not look like the same unit that put up 23 points in the second half of a 33-20 season opening win over New England.Tannehill was sacked six times in last weeks loss to Baltimore and has led just two touchdown drives over the past eight quarters. The Dolphins escaped with a 16-13 road victory over the New York Jets two weeks ago, but after taking a 10-0 lead on Baltimore in the first quarter were outscored 28-3 the rest of the way.It makes your life a little bit more difficult when youre behind the chains so to speak, said head coach Joe Philbin, referring to some negative runs, sacks and penalties on first downs that plagued Miami against the Ravens. I think if you look back at what we were able to do in the first game (against New England), I think we were able to be in some manageable third downs and I think thats going to be important in this game. Youre on the road, theyve got a good pass defence and a good pass rush. The loss of veteran left tackle Branden Albert to a season-ending knee injury last month at Detroit has taken its toll on an offensive line that has given up 14 sacks in the last four games without him. Rookie JaWuan James had to move over from the right tackle spot and his college teammate at Tennessee, Dallas Thomas, took over at right tackle. Several of Baltimores sacks came at the expense of Thomas, and he will likely be targeted more on Sunday.Despite the shaky performance last week, Tannehill still has confidence in his linemen and they have confidence in his ability to keep plays alive with his feet and make quick decisions with his throws. That aspect of his game will have to work in concert with the protection. It helps, especially if you get beat on the block he can make it right a lot of times, James said. But we dont have a clock in our heads. Weve got to keep blocking until we hear the whistle.A combination of James and veteran guards Mike Pouncey and Daryn Colledge have been in Thomas ear this week making sure he moves on from the Ravens game. Miami will need the entire line to play better against a hot Patriots team.Wide receiver Mike Wallace is expecting to be covered again by Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis and even though he and Tannehill havent connected enough on the deep ball, he is ready for Revis to contest the route anyway. Revis acknowledged that Wallace is still a vertical threat and that he has to defend him that way.I know Ill see him. How much? Im not sure, said Wallace, who has 700 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. We are playing the Patriots. You never know what those guys are thinking. You just have to go about your business and prepare like youre going to play against him or whoever. However the game unfolds, well be ready.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Phil Hughes Jersey . Toronto FC lose 2-1 to 10-man Sporting Kansas City on a night it was equally shocking more goals werent scored and more players werent sent off.The intensity of the match was superior to most across Major League Soccer and both teams proved worthy being considered among the best in the league. Unfortunately the referee, Ted Unkel, wasnt up for it and is nowhere the best MLS has to offer. It was Unkels eighth game as head referee and serves as clear indicator he isnt yet ready for a game as such. The match was played at a pace and intensity beyond his experience and ability. Missed calls are one thing; a lack of consistency in calls is another. It played out as an awful combination for onlookers in a match that should be talked about for all the right sporting reasons rather than officiating futility.Toronto FC heads on a four-game road trip as undeserved losers. Saturday was a measuring bar kind of match for Toronto, seeing where they stand against the 2013 MLS Cup Champions and top team in the Eastern Conference. Despite the loss, one has to feel good about the state of Toronto FC. They went shot for shot, blow for blow with Sporting Kansas City, no small feat for a team thats experienced an incredible amount of change within the squad over the last six months. Team progress is plain to see. There is a lot to like about this team and the performance. Just not the result. Here are my five thoughts after the 2-1 loss:1) Say Unkel – There is nothing worse in football than a result of a good game being determined by the shortcomings of a referee. Queue Unkel. Ted Unkel. The crowd at BMO left shaken and stirred. Sporting Kansas City head coach Peter Vermes suggestion Unkel did a good job is laughable. Its obvious who came away with the positive result. Unkel was awful. Absolutely terrible. The TSN Turning Point came in the 23rd minute. Michael Bradley played a wonderful through ball finding Gilberto behind the back-line. Gilberto took a touch before Aurelien Collin, the last man back, clumsily tackled him from behind, taking down the player. No card from Unkel, not even a free-kick. "An under-12 ref couldve got that one," said Toronto FC Head Coach Ryan Nelsen post-match of the non-call. And hes spot on. Gilberto was in alone. Collin didnt make contact with the ball. As plain a foul as there is to see. It should have been a foul and sending off. Collin and Sporting Kansas City remained in the game because of the refs cowardice to make the proper call. Chasing the game for upwards of 65 minutes would have put Kansas City in a negative context. The advantage was taken away from TFC because of the referees incompetence. After failing in that moment, Unkel lost control of the match. His consistency in decisions went out the window. Giving advantage one moment and taking it away the next, then brandishing two questionable yellows to Jackson and Justin Morrow sent the Toronto FC players, coaching staff, and home crowd into a state of complete frustration. The ref became tentative, and failed to get into proper positions to make subsequent calls. It became a mess.Skip to the 69th minute, this time Igor Juliao as last man is beaten by Dominic Oduro down the right flank on the counter. No Sporting Kansas City player could stick with Oduro all night. Again, Oduro past the backline and in all alone before Juliao reaches out, arm extended and pulls the TFC winger down by the jersey. Last man back and takes away a scoring opportunity – automatic red, right? Nope. A yellow issued to Juliao. Another missed sending off. The suggestion the pull-back/foul doesnt stop a clear scoring chance on the play is a faulty one. Oduro was a step behind the last man and multiple steps past the entire back-line. Yes, the ball was wide, but Oduro – the fastest player on the field – one-on-one versus a goalkeeper is as clear-cut a scoring chance as youll see in my books. If thats not a scoring chance, Im not sure what is. The goalkeeper was back on his line, and there was no way hed beat Oduro to the ball. And the suggestion the players recovery runs would have caught the speedy Oduro is a pipe dream. If Unkel wasnt in a position to see the back-line and how far Oduro was past it, the lineman, who was trying to keep up with the play, should have helped with the decision. Instead, no red was shown and Kansas City let off the hook. Not good enough from a referee at this level. The Sporting Kansas City sending off eventuallly came with Matt Besler falling victim of the dreaded make up call.ddddddddddddBeslers second bookable offence coming in the 75th minute may have been a foul, but hardly a yellow. Oduro earned that card for Besler, as much as Collin and Juliao had earned prior sending offs to no avail. Instead of finding the winner a man up with 15 minutes to go, Toronto FC conceded. Salt in the wound. The wound was opened much earlier, and Unkels attempt to heal was futile. One has to wonder how the game would have played out with Toronto FC a man up for over an hour. Or what may have happened if Juliao was also sent off, as he should have been. Unkel took that away. A porous refereeing display.2) Jackson Three (misses) – The Brazilian may have scored in the 16th minute, a calm finish on a wonderful through-ball by Oduro, but a lack of composure and touch in front of goal in the second half was the co-culprit in the loss. Jackson missed three absolute sitters over the second 45. Gilberto twice played provider, putting it on the platter for the TFC winger. Gilberto found Jackson on the overlap, only for the Brazilian to put the ball on his right foot before passing it into the arms of a diving Andy Gruenebaum. The second service, a sublime ball by Gilberto to Jackson on the far post with the latter getting the finish all-wrong. The third miss was an Oduro ball played through the six-yard box. How it does not simply hit Jackson and go in is beyond me. Instead, a swing and scuff and the ball miraculously stays out of the net. Three missed chances by Jackson, to go along with TFC hitting the post twice in the first half, plus Doneil Henry swinging and almost missing while wide open on the penalty spot in the dying minutes stand out as missed opportunities. The chances were manufactured. The finish was simply not there this night. Hence even more frustration.3) Outstanding Oduro – The outside right midfielder was unquestionably Toronto FCs Man of the Match. Sporting Kansas City had no answer to Oduros speed down the right flank. Seth Sinovic looked like a pylon all night. The entire Kansas City back four were left in his dust, and it wasnt just his speed, but Oduros touch on the ball, service, and decision-making all of the highest quality. The attack-mindedness of TFCs wing players makes Toronto a constant threat on the counter. For what Oduro and Jackson give up defensively is more than made up in what they can do going forward. The preference to attack puts more pressure on TFCs fullbacks, as well as the centre-midfield players. Fortunately, these are positions of strength and the shape of Torontos back six remains strong with intensity and commitment to match.4) Fantastic Feilhaber – Kansas Citys Benny Feilhaber and his standout second half performance lead his team to victory. The number 10 was everywhere on the night and did well to adapt against a strong Toronto FC central midfield. Feilhaber dropped deeper as the night went on, finding gaps in and around Collen Warner. His vision and commitment to the move started and led to Kansas Citys first goal. His intelligence and freedom to roam in Peter Vermes system gives the team yet another standout player. Warner struggled to limit his creativity – an ultimate compliment to Feilhaber considering the outstanding form Warner has shown over the last three weeks.5) More than half way there – Toronto FCs MLS season is beyond the midway point and the team is only three points off their total for all of last season. 26 points through 18 games is a solid return considering a stop-and-start schedule, various player movements, and an unfamiliar squad in need of games to find consistency. If one is not overwhelming positive about the product put forth, one is simply being negative for the sake of it. The team has belief and difference-makers throughout the squad. General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko joined the pre-match show on TSN 1050 and said hes happy with his team and will continue to keep his options open to improve the squad before the transfer window closes August 6th. Bezbatchenko has already found drastic in-season improvements to the team that started the season. The team has depth and competition for spots for the first time in the clubs history. The team is playoff quality and third place in the standings provides further evidence to the quality on the field. A rematch between Toronto FC and Sporting Kansas City come playoff time would be something to see.Next up for Toronto FC is a trip to second place DC United (10-5-4) Wednesday night on TSN 1050 Radio. The Riders sacked the first-year Hamilton starter 10 times and limited the Tiger-Cats to less than 200 yards total offence in a convincing 31-10 victory on Sunday at Mosaic Stadium. "Our defence played lights out," said Riders quarterback Darian Durant, who tossed a pair of touchdown passes in the game. "Give them the lead and they can really tee off on the opposing team." Ricky Foley led the Riders defence with six tackles and three sacks. John Chick and Derek Walker each had two sacks, and the defending Grey Cup champions looked dominant in front of 19,285 spectators that braved wet and windy weather. "It seemed like a lot of things we working for us," Chick said. "You see the chemistry of the guys today. A bunch of us have a full season under our belts working together and the new guys are coming along. To see everyone working together was great." The poor weather didnt slow the Riders offence. Saskatchewan scored on three of its first four possessions and enjoyed a 24-1 lead at halftime. The Riders racked up 196 yards of offence in the first half compared to just 96 yards from Hamilton. First-year Riders running back Anthony Allen rushed for 158 yards and scored two touchdowns in his first CFL start. Durant connected with eight different receivers on the day and threw touchdown strikes to Allen and fellow newcomer Brett Swain. "We live out here," Durant said when asked how well the offence moved the ball despite the lousy weather. "IIt has been raining for a month and weve been practising in it day in and day out.dddddddddddd We prepared ourselves for this and we did a great job of not letting (the weather) be a factor." Tiger-Cats head coach Kent Austin didnt use the weather as an excuse for his teams poor debut, although it didnt help in its bid for a come-from-behind victory on the road. "I saw not a very good football team today," Austin said. "We have to make a great improvement in a lot of areas right now. I have to get our guys more discipline. Our penalty situation is ridiculous right now. "It was a monsoon out there, and the wind a Im not making excuses for (Collaros). It was tough conditions to play in. Their pressure just compounded things." Saskatchewan had Collaros on the run early. Walkers first sack snuffed Hamiltons opening offensive drive, and on their second possession, it was a sack by linebacker Sam Hurl that led to punter Justin Medlock conceding a safety. A Collaros fumble and a snap that sailed over Medlocks head on a punt attempt just added to Hamiltons woes in the first half. Luke Tasker scored Hamiltons lone touchdown on a 10-yard pass from Collaros. "Im not angry at the team," said Austin, whose club was penalized 17 times for 148 yards. "Its about getting better. This game means something only if we learn to get better from it. Other than that, it has no meaning. We have to limit our mistakes and learn how to get better." PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Golden State Warriors were thrilled to have Klay Thompson. Thompson, returning after a one-game absence to attend his grandfathers funeral in the Bahamas, scored 23 of his 27 points in the second half and hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 11.1 seconds remaining to lift the Warriors to a 113-112 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night. Stephen Curry led all scorers with 37 points for the Warriors, who rallied from an 18-point deficit midway through the third quarter to snap a two-game skid. Golden State also moved 1 1/2 games behind Portland for the Western Conferences No. 5 playoff spot. "Thats as good a win as weve had in three years," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. "It would have been very easy to fold our tent and hang our heads. Klay and Steph were spectacular." Damian Lillard finished with 26 points and Nicholas Batum had 23 points and 14 rebounds for the Blazers, who lost for the fifth time in six games. Portland also played without injured All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who missed his second game with a lower back contusion. Batum had a chance to tie the score with 5.8 seconds remaining, but missed the second of two free throws. The Blazers got the rebound but failed to get another shot off. Curry dedicated the victory to Thompson, who had to take three different flights to get from the Bahamas to Portland and didnt arrive until the wee hours Sunday morning. "We wanted to get this one for Klay," said Curry, who made 11 of 24 shots, including 6 of 12 from 3-point range. "Hes been through a lot this week, put on a lot of miles, and obviously ben through a lot. "For him to compartmentalize a little bit for two hours and come out and play was big for us. It says a lot about how much hes committed to whats going on here." Thompson didnt show any fatigue, especially in the second half when he connected on 8 of 14 shots, including three 3-pointers. "Yeah, three flights, but I slept on most of them," Thompson said. "I actually felt fresh when I stepped on the court. You might not believe me, but I warmed up before the game and felt good." Robin Lopez finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Wesley Matthews and Dorell Wright had 13 points each for the Blazers, who led by 18 points twice, the second time at 72-54 with 7:20 remaining in the third quarter. "We have to put that game away," Matthews said. "With guys like Steph and Klay, they can get hot and thats what they did. We still gave ourselves a chance, but were at the point now where if we have a team down 18, we have to put that game away." Golden State pulled to 85-77 going into the fourth quarter and took the lead with 6:01 to play after Thompson blocked Lillards shot at one end of the court and got fouled on a drive to the basket at the other end while Portland coach Terry Stotts was also assessed a technical foul. Curry made the technical free throw and then Thompson made 1 of 2 foul shots to put the Warriors in front 97-96 -- their first lead since 31-29. From there, the lead changed four times and there were two ties before Thompsons 3 from in front of the Portland bench put the Warriors in front, 110-107, with 53.8 seconds left. After a dunk by Lillard pulled Portland to 110-109, Curry turned the ball over. Lillard was then fouled driving to the basket and made both free throws to make it 111-110 with 20.7 seconds remaining. Thompsons third 3 of the game gave the Warriors the lead for good. "Hes a big-time player," Jackson said of Thompson. "Hes as cool as they come. It does not bother him making and missing shots. Hes not afraid to take the next one." David Lee had 16 points and Jermaine ONeal added eight points and four rebounds off the bench for the Warriors. "Disappointed to lose another close game," Stotts said. "Curry got hot in the second half. We have to figure out ways to close out games and realize when we have a 16-, 18-point lead, we cant take our foot off the gas." Portlands Mo Williams, expected to miss two weeks with a strained right hip muscle, returned after missing only two games and had 12 points, four assists and two steals. NOTES: Batum matched his season high with five 3-pointers and became the first player in franchise history to record consecutive games with 20 or more points, 10 or more rebounds and four or more 3-pointers. Hes also the first NBA player with 22 or more points, 14 or more rebounds, and four or more 3-pointers in back-to-back games since Minnesotas Kevin Love on Jan. 1-2, 2012. ... Jackson said before the game that the Blazers are a different team without Aldridge, who was averaging team highs of 23.4 points and 11.1 rebounds when was injured in the third quarter of Wednesdays 103-90 loss at San Antonio. ... The Blazers came in second in league scoring at 107.3 points a game and had scored 90 or more points in 20 consecutive games. The last time Portland was held to fewer than 90 points was in a 98-81 loss at home to Memphis. ... Jackson lobbied for eighth-year centre Andrew Bogut as a candidate for the NBAs all-defensive team. "Hes the anchor to our defence," Jackson said. "Hes a guy who changes, alters, blocks a lot of shots at the rim, protects the paint, and rebounds the basketball. STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Happy Valley was a cacophony of bells and songs and cheers that echoed all the way to Mount Nittany. It sure beat the alternative for Bill Belton. On fourth-and-1 and with an upset on the line, Belton dove ahead for 3 yards. Three plays later, he was in the end zone, and Penn States party was on. "If I dont get the yard," Belton said, "Im going to hear it the rest of the time Im here." Instead, he settled for that familiar refrain of 100,000 fans swapping "We are!" "Penn State!" chants, a needed release after the longest game in team history. Belton ran for a 2-yard touchdown in the fourth overtime to lift Penn State past No. 18 Michigan 43-40 in maybe the biggest win in coach Bill OBriens two seasons with the Nittany Lions. Penn States Christian Hackenberg was sensational in regulation on the tying drive, completing passes of 29 yards to Brandon Felder and 33 yards to Allen Robinson to bring the ball to the 1 with 29 seconds left. The freshman quarterback sneaked in for the first rushing TD against Michigan this season, tying the game at 34-all. Brendan Gibbons kicked two field goals and missed two -- one was blocked -- in OT for the Wolverines (5-1, 1-1). Sam Ficken kicked two, but passed on even trying another on the last possession. Instead, Penn State went on fourth-and-1 from the 16. Belton converted and made the gamble a good one. "Coach had confidence in me and I had confidence that I would be able to get the 1 yard we needed to keep the game going," The Nittany Lions (4-2, 1-1 Big Ten) stormed the field in wild celebration, sending more than 100,000 fans into a frenzy. "I just ran somewhere and hit somebody," Hackenberg said. "I saw him bounce it and I saw he had the edge and after that I just ran over to the sideline to celebrate with my teammates. Still recovering from scandal, the Nittany Lions gave 107,884 fans at Beaver Stadium at long last a milestone celebration in Happy Valley. The Nittany Lions mobbed OBrien, and he led the charge toward the students in the stands to sing the fight song. Penn States victory bell rang long after the players had stunned the unbeaten Wolverines. "Nothing should amaze you," OBrien said. "Theres going to be twists and turns. These are tough kids. They love Penn State. They love playing for each other. The locker room is such a great scene right now because these kids really believe in each other." Hackenberg, who threw for 305 yards, made it possible with plenty of help from his receivers on the final drive of the fourth. Robinson expanded his 6-foot-3 frame about another 4 inches on a fantastic, outstretched leap in the corner that sent him crashing down a yard from the goal line. "It was just me and (the defender) over there and it was a 50-50 ball," he said. "He threw it up and gave me an opportunity to make the catch and I was able to make the play. Hackenberg plowed through for one sweet yard on the next play. The 18-year-old freshman threw three touchdown passes in the first half to stake Penn State to a 21-10 lead. After throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble in the first half, Devin Gardner put the Wolverines ahead with touchdown passes in the third and fourth quarters. "I think you always work hard at any time, but to lose in overtime, if you let it take a toll, it will," coach Brady Hoke said. Gardner connected with Jeremy Gallon for a 16-yard TD pass for a 27-24 lead with 28 seconds left in the third. Gardner was 15 of 28 for three touchdowns and he rushed for 121 yards. He then hit Devin Funchess in the back of the end zone for a 37-yard TD and a 34-24 lead. Funchess had 112 yards receiving and two scores. Ficken hit a 43-yarder with 6:35 left to make it 34-27, keeping Hackenberg and the Nittany Lions alive for one thrilling finish. Gibbons missed a 52-yarder with 2 seconds left in regulation. Michigan defensive end Frank Clark returned a fumble for a score in the third quarter to cut it to 21-17, and spark Michigans comeback. Michigan did get a boost with the return of star linebacker Jake Ryan, who had yet to play this season after he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the spring. "Its not about mistakes. Its about us executing," Ryan said. "On some plays we didnt do that and thats what we need to get done. Thats what we need to get fixed." Michigan offensive lineman Taylor Lewan, an All-American who decided to pass on the NFL and return for his senior season, sat out the second half with an undisclosed injury. This was a scene in Happy Valley straight out of the Joe Paterno era -- not like the late Hall of Fame coach has ever been forgotten. Johnny Unitas Jersey . Spencer Abbott and Trevor Smith scored third-period goals erasing a 2-1 deficit giving Toronto a late 3-2 lead.Eugenie Bouchards days of playing lower-tier events and working through qualifying draws appear to be over. The Canadian tennis players first full season on the WTA Tour was a strong one. She has risen to No. 32 in the world rankings and will likely be seeded at the first Grand Slam event of the 2014 season. Bouchard scored some big victories this year and proved she can hang on court with the sports elite. Her next mission is to build on that momentum as she looks ahead to next year. "Ive always believed in my skill," Bouchard said Friday on a conference call. "I think it was just a matter of time for me to get to this level. But then again, I dont want to stay here. "I want to work hard in the off-season and get ready for 2014 and try to improve as fast as I can and even more for next year." At just 19 years of age, Bouchard posted impressive victories this past season over big names like Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic and Sloane Stephens. The young Canadian pushed Venus Williams to three sets last month in Tokyo and reached her first Tour final this month at the Japan Open. Not bad for a player who was ranked No. 144 in the world at the end of the 2012 season. Bouchard was also given heavy promotional treatment at last summers Rogers Cup in Toronto. Her matches were given showcourt attention and she performed admirably in the brighter spotlight. "I do like it, its part of the job," she said. "I thinnk the harder I work and the better I do, that will happen more often.dddddddddddd" Bouchard doesnt have a specific ranking goal for next season. She simply wants to improve all facets of her game and get stronger by continuing to play the top players on tour. One area where she noticed an improvement of late was her on-court transition from defence to offence. She also feels her mental game is better. "Ive played big matches and gained so much experience," she said. "Ive played on centre court at the French Open, centre court at Wimbledon and at Louis Armstrong (stadium court) at the U.S. Open. Those are big matches and big moments that really have given me a lot of confidence and strength and experience." Bouchard, who is from Westmount, Que., but trains primarily with coach Nick Saviano in Florida, has a 39-24 record this year and earned over US$415,000 in prize money. Her top highlight was beating Ivanovic on Centre Court at the All-England Club, the same venue where Bouchard won the Wimbledon junior title a year earlier. "It was an amazing feeling," she said. "In tennis you cant get a bigger stage than that." Bouchards 2014 campaign will kick off during the holiday season at the Hopman Cup mixed tennis team tournament in Perth, Australia. She will team up with Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., for the Dec. 28-Jan. 4 event before continuing preparations for the Australian Open. NEW YORK, N.Y. - The highest-ranking Hispanic woman in a management position at Major League Baseball headquarters said in a lawsuit on Thursday she has faced discrimination there for two decades.Sylvia Linds lawsuit, filed in Manhattan federal court, seeks unspecified damages for what she describes as a failure by the league to consider, interview, appoint and promote qualified Hispanic women to managerial and executive positions. Lind, 48, says the league has created a hostile work environment for her because of her age.Lind, the leagues director of baseball initiatives in its Office of the Commissioner, names as defendants the league, Commissioner Bud Selig and Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, who supervised her. Messages to the league were not immediately returned Thursday. The lawsuit says Lind works in an industry dominated by white men and has been passed over for promotions and underpaid since 1995.Lind said Hispanics are underrepresented in the management level while baseball has a high percentage of Hispanic players. She said of 52 people who are vice-presidents or above only two are Hispanic and only 12 are women.According to the lawsuit, Lind, who is of Cuban descent and lives in New Jersey, earned her law degree from Fordham University School of Law in 1995. It says she began working for Major League Baseball on Nov. 21, 1995, as supervisor in the legal department of MLB Properties Inc. at an annual salary of $43,000.She said she was the only Hispanic female lawyer in the legal department at the time and no Hispanic attorneys have been hired since.Lind said her troubles with the league worsened after Robinson, who played for several teams between 1956 and 1976, became executive vice-president of baseball development in June 2012 and criticized her writing and other skills. She said Robinson, who won rookie of the year and MVP honours with the Cincinnati Reds and MVP with the Baltimore Orioles, lacked the educational credentials, professional license and executive experience to qualify for the job, which paid him more than $1 million annually.Lind said the leagues discriminatory conduct was carried out even as she was assigned to plan, advance and promote the leagues annual Civil Rights Game. While plaintiff has always maintained a professional demeanour to the public and endeavoured to do what is in the best interest for MLB, it has been extremely disheartening, utterly demoralizing and extraordinarily taxing on her, both emotionally and psychologically, to almost singlehandedly perpetuate what she has known to be the diversity and equal employment opportunity falsehood, the lawsuit said. It was never close Friday as the Boston Red Sox got to Mark Buehrle early en route to an 8-1 win. With NFL training camps underway, the league is abuzz with position battles, injury news and rookies making an immediate impact. Each day, TSN.ca provides the latest rumours, reports and speculation from around the NFL beat. Missing Time San Francisco 49ers receiver Michael Crabtree will miss one to two weeks with an injury , coach Jim Harbaugh announced on Friday. Harbaugh refused to detail the injury, but said it was not related to the Achilles injury that sidelined Crabtree until Week 13 of last season. Of the inury, Harbaugh simply stated Crabtree was "working through something." In five regular season games last season, Crabtree caught 19 passes for 284 yards and one touchdown. He caught 15 passes for 203 yards in three playoff games. The news comes just two days after quarterback Colin Kaepernick told the media that Crabtree was a "a step or two quicker" than last year. The 49ers lost running back Kendall Hunter for the season already with a training camp injury and will be without running back LaMichael James for roughly month after he suffered a dislocated elbow. Great Expectations According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the Green Bay Packers are counting on 2013 first-round Datone Jones to start at defensive end this season. Jones, selected 26th overall, is coming off a disappointing and injury-plagued rookie season with the Packers. The UCLA product managed just 10 tackles, however showed strong moments as he managed 3.5 sacks. The Packers base defensive will likely consist of Jones and Mike Daniels at the defensive end positions with B.J. Raji at nose tackle. Time for Teddy? Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune "wouldnt be surprised" if Teddy Bridgewater opens the season as the Minnesota Vikings starting quarterback. According to Scogginns, the coaching staff sounds willing to let Bridgewater start if he beats out Matt Cassel for the job in the preseason.dddddddddddd The Vikings traded back into the first round of this years NFL Draft to select Bridgewater with the 32nd overall pick. Cassel threw for 1,807 yards last season with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 9 games (six starts) with the Vikings last season. Former first-round draft pick Christian Ponder is the third quarterback in camp with the Vikings, though he appears to be ruled out of starting competition. Still Out New Orleans Saints wide receiver Kenny Stills has not practiced since suffering a quad injury on July 25. Coming off an impressive rookie season in which he posted 641 yards and five touchdowns, Stills is fighting for a starting position in the Saints offence. In his absence, first-round pick and Brandin Cooks and third-year receiver Nick Toon are enjoying added snaps. Head coach Sean Payton told reporters on Thursday that Toon is having a "fantastic camp." Long Return St. Louis Rams left tackle Jake Long took part in team drills in practice on Thursday. Long is making his way back from tearing both his MCL and ACL in Week 15 of last season, in his first year with the Rams. Long signed a four-year, $34 million contract with the Rams prior to 2013 season. He was drafted first-overall by the Miami Dolphins in the 2008 NFL Draft. Bolstering the Line The Arizona Cardinals signed tackle Max Starks on Friday, adding depth to their offensive group. Starks appeared in two games with the St. Louis Rams last season. The 32-year-old, who stands at 6-8, 345 pounds, was selected in the third round of the 2004 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Starks spent nine seasons with the Steelers before signing with the Rams prior to the 2013 season. NEW YORK -- Yankees manager Joe Girardi insists it will be "open season" on Alex Rodriguez if Major League Baseball fails to suspend Bostons Ryan Dempster for hitting the star slugger with a pitch. "That baseball is a weapon. Its not a tennis ball. ... Its a weapon, and it can do a lot of damage to someones life," Girardi said Tuesday before the Yankees played a doubleheader against Toronto. "And thats why I was so upset about it. You can express your opinion and be upset with someone, but you just cant start throwing baseballs at people. I mean, its scary." Dempster threw one pitch behind A-Rods knees and two more inside in the second inning at Fenway Park on Sunday. Then his 3-0 pitch struck Rodriguezs left elbow pad and ricocheted off his back. Girardi sprinted onto the field, screaming at plate umpire Brian ONora for not ejecting the pitcher. Girardi was tossed as the benches and bullpens emptied, and Rodriguez homered off Dempster to spark a sixth-inning rally that lifted New York to a 9-6 win. Girardi said his profane rant probably was the angriest hes been on a ballfield. Rodriguez was suspended for 211 games on Aug. 5 for violating baseballs drug and labour agreements but is playing while he appeals. Red Sox pitcher John Lackey criticized the rules last week for allowing A-Rod to play. MLB is expected to decide Tuesday or Wednesday on any discipline. Girardi said if Dempster isnt punished, it makes Rodriguez "open season for people, and that cant happen. Its not fair. If a player is suspended for throwing at someone, theyre going to get their appeal. Are we just going to throw that out, too?" Dempster maintained he was just pitching inside and wasnt trying to hit Rodriguez. New York didnt retaliate Sunday. Girardi wouldnt say whether there is a need to respond when the teams next meet, at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 5. Girardi said "protecting your own" in baseball has gone on for "for a long time. And unfortunately youre part of those situations sometimes, but thats part of the game." The manager also discussed the matter with his 6-year-old son, Dante. "Part of pitching is pitching inside, thats all part of it," he recalled saying. "But I dont ever want you to hit anyone on purpose." Cheap Custom Baseball Jerseys . Diego Simeone will stay at Atletico Madrid this summer, but the Argentine wants a stronger squad - including Chelsea striker Diego Costa - with which to compete next season, according to Sky Sports Spanish football expert Guillem Balague. Atletico were beaten 5-3 on penalties by Real Madrid in Saturdays Champions League final, the second time in the space of just three years they have lost out on Europes premier club trophy to their city rivals.Simeones side also finished only three points behind champions Barcelona in La Liga in what turned out to be a campaign of near misses for the Rojiblancos. In the aftermath of defeat at San Siro on the weekend, Simeone hinted that he may now have to think about his future in the Spanish capital. For me, it is time to reflect. I think I have to think about things. It wouldnt be good if I didnt want to reflect after losing two finals, Simeone told reporters following defeat to Real. Simeone shows his anguish after watching Atletico lose to Real in the Champions League final However, despite clearly being disappointed having ended the campaign without a trophy, Simeone will be at the Vicente Calderon at the start of next season, says Balague. It all started in the press conference after the Champions League final when Simeone himself said he was going to think about what to do next, Balague told Sky Sports News HQ.He wasnt actually pointing at his future, not with those words, but certainly left a question mark. The club immediately said: hes just upset, thats all it is. We have been planning the season for six months, the club said, and we want him to stay until 2020, which is the end of his contract. In the middle of that, of course, in the 2017/18 season, Atletico Madrid will move to a new stadium and they want him to be the coach there. But Simeone has not said a word since then, suggesting that there are problems.Atletis boss, though, does want his employers to bring in more players over the summer, in particular forwards, in order to help him realise his managerial ambitions. One of those striking targets is former Atletico frontman Costa, who left the club to join Chelsea two years ago, although Simeones future at the club is not thought to be dependent on re-signing the Brazilian, says Balague. Yes, Diego Costa is one of them, but he hasnt put the condition that if Costa doesnt come, he will go. Guillem Balague on Simeones transfer targets I think the kind of problems that there are is number one, players, said Balague. If he is going to win titles, the Champions League, he is not going to do it with Fernando Torres up front. He needs a bigger striker and a bigger scorer throughout the season because you saw that in the league, 18 goals conceded, all that Atletico Madrid had was the best defence in Europe. But they didnt score enough goals, which made them short to win the league. So its a little bit of a scary moment for Atletico Madrid. The club is certain that he is staying but Simeone will say: I will with conditions.I do feel that he was upset and wanted to take all the blame, all the responsibility for the defeat and didnt want the players to have any, so he said if I failed - and he used the word for the first time in four-and-a-half years at Atletico Madrid - then it is down to me.I feel its that and his conditions are that he wants a stronger squad. He now realises that with more money coming from television, more investment from China, they are a healthier club and he wants better players. Simeone with Atletico president Enrique Cerezo and sports manager Jose Luis Perez Caminero Yes, Diego Costa is one of them, but he hasnt put the condition as such that if Costa doesnt come, he will go.It will be an interesting summer for Atletico Madrid and it was a double hurt for Atletico Madrid fans after losing the Champions League. As for where Simeone may end up when he does finally decide to leave Atletico, Balague believes the 46-year-old will have many suitors from all over Europe interested in his services. He hasnt got a team in the Premier League, he said. He will have Inter Milan at some point when he wants it, but I do think he is going to stay. The Canadiens and Ducks win; notes on Max Pacioretty, Nathan Beaulieu, Daniel Briere, John Gibson, Devante Smith-Pelly, Jarret Stoll and more. MAKE IT SEVEN Facing elimination, the Montreal Canadiens came out of the gate quickly to take an early lead, got a few bounces and 26 saves from Carey Price on the way to a 4-0 win, tying the series at three games apiece. Montreals big scorers came to play, as LW Max Pacioretty scored once and added an assist. It was Paciorettys second goal of the playoffs, his first of this series. Pacioretty struggled early in the series, but has been better (43 5-on-5 shot attempts for, 41 against) over the past three games. Paciorettys assist game on the first of Thomas Vaneks two goals. A couple of additions to the Habs lineup paid off in limited roles for Game Six. Veteran C Daniel Briere, a healthy scratch in Game Five, was on for nine shot attempts for and four against, anchoring the fourth line with Dale Weise and Brandon Prust. Rookie D Nathan Beaulieu, in for Douglas Murray, chipped in an assist and was one for 58.3% of 5-on-5 shot attempts when he was on the ice. Canadiens D Josh Gorges, charged with protecting the lead, played a game-high 26:19, and was on the ice for 25.0% of 5-on-5 shot attempts. With Gorges off the ice, the Canadiens held 64.3% of the shot attempts at even strength. That the series is going seven games doesnt come as a major surprise -- over the past decade, the Canadiens and Bruins have gone seven games in a playoff series in 2011, 2008 and 2004 -- but with a couple of missed opportunities earlier in the series (ie. Lost lead in Game Two, OT loss in Game Four), the Canadiens needed a really big performance to take this particular series to Game Seven. The Bruins have been the better team ove the course of this season and carried play more consistently over the course of this series, but that doesnt much matter now. Wednesday night will bring a winner-take-all Game Seven between these arch-rivals, with a trip to the Eastern Conference Final awaiting the winner. DUCKS FLYING HIGH For the first time in the Freeway Series, the home team came out on top, and the Anaheim Ducks 4-3 win in Game Five gave them a 3-2 series lead over the Los Angeles Kings. The Ducks turning to rookie G John Gibson, in their time of need, has altered the series and Gibson turned aside 39 of 42 Kings shots in Game Five to earn the win. In five regular season and playoff games with the Ducks this season, Gibson has stopped 150 of 157 shots (.955 SV%). This wouldnt be the first time that a rookie goaltender made a name for himself in the NHL playoffs, but Gibsons performance in the last two games has already tipped the series in Anaheims favour. Ducks LW Devante Smith-Pelly is taking a liking to his role on the number one line with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry. Smith-Pelly scored a pair of goals and led the Ducks with six shot attempts and seven hits. Once the Ducks jumped out to a 4-1 lead, they went into a defensive shell as the Kings mounted a comeback attempt. LW Marian Gaborik scored a pair of goals, giving him a playoff-leading eight goals, and had seven shots on goal. Not surprisingly, the Kings top line of Gaborik, Justin Williams and Anze Kopitar carried play, all three on the ice for better than 70% of 5-on-5 shot attempts. Unheralded Kings C Jarret Stoll has been having a tremendous series. In five games, hes been on the ice for 65.8% (79 for, 41 against) of the 5-on-5 shot attempts. Hes gone without a point in the past eight games, but the puck is spending a lot of time in Anaheims zone when Stoll is on the ice. Also, in Game Five, Kings D Drew Doughty had 13 shot attempts, including a deflection in the final minute that was kicked aside by Gibson. Kings C Mike Richards played 9:50, second-lowest on the team (ahead of only Jordan Nolan) and didnt take a shift in the final 10 minutes. In 250 regular season and playoff games over the past three seasons with Los Angeles, prior to Game Five, Richards had played more than 10 minutes in 249 of those games. The Kings may hold an edge in territorial play in this series, but theyre now facing a deficit and have to win back-to-back games against the Ducks. Finding a way to get Gibson off his game has to be the priority because, right now, the kid is playing well enough to leave Los Angeles royally disappointed. Woods mixed two double-bogeys, a triple-bogey and six bogeys with a pair of birdies in a round of 11-over 82. He ended 36 holes at 13-over-par 155. This will be the second straight missed cut for Woods. His last missed cut was also his last official PGA Tour start, the 2014 PGA Championship. Woodss previous worst round was an 81 in the third round of the 2001 Open Championship on a day in which nine other players shot 80 or worse and just nine players broke par. I was more committed to what I was doing on my back nine, hit some better shots, but still have a lot of work to do, Woods stated. It was not a very good day from the start, until the end, but I fought all day. After an opening par on the 10th, Woods drive at the 11th stopped under a tree and he barely moved his second shot 10 yards. He scrambled for bogey from there. At the 14th, Woods took an unplayable lie from a bush. Woods later left a flop shot short on the same hole and that led to a double- bogey. It got worse at the 15th. His drive on the par-5 found water. He hit the fairway with his second tee shot, then dumped his fourth in a greenside bunker. He left his sannd shot in the rough and later 2-putted for triple-bogey to slide to 8-over par for the tournament.ddddddddddddA poor chip on the 17th led to a bogey and he dropped another stroke at 18, where he failed to save par from a greenside bunker. The opening nine 44 for Woods tied his highest 9-hole score in his PGA Tour career. Woods settled down with three straight pars to start his second nine, but more trouble loomed. His tee shot flew the green at the par-3 fourth, and he skulled his chip back into the front bunker. After blasting on, Woods 2-putted for double-bogey from 18 feet out. The 14-time major champion finally got one stroke back as he rolled in a 5- foot birdie try at the fifth. Woods gave that right back as he failed to save par from a greenside bunker at No. 6 and he followed with a 3-putt bogey on the seventh. Woods drained a 9-foot birdie chance at eight, then missed the green at nine. He played his third to 11 feet and he missed the par putt. Its golf. We all have days like this. Unfortunately mine was in a public forum, in a public setting, but we all have days like this. We take the good with the bad. Even on bad days like this, keep fighting because on the good days you have to keep fighting as well, stated Woods. So he and his Toronto FC teammates say they will have no problem getting up for their Amway Canadian Championship final against rival Montreal Impact, even if the result doesnt count toward Major League Soccer standings. "No, not at all. I love cup games. Theres a prize at the end of it," the Toronto defender said after practice Tuesday. "Back in England it was the FA Cup, now that were here its the Canadian Cup, and its just as important for me as any league game, because theres pride at stake and theres a lot to play for. Its a big game, no doubt about it, and one were looking forward to." Toronto hosts Montreal for the first of two legs Wednesday at BMO Field. The second leg is June 4 at Saputo Stadium in Montreal. The team with the higher aggregate score after the two matches also represents Canada in the 2014-2015 CONCACAF Champions League. "Very very important," captain Steven Caldwell said. "We want to win the Cup. We obviously want to get a good lead if we can from the first leg, its going to be tough, were playing our rivals, a very good side, who are . . . far better than theyve been showing." Toronto is hoping to reclaim the title they relinquished to Montreal last season. TFC won the championship four straight years -- from 2009 through 2012 -- while the Impact won the inaugural competition in 2008 and again last year. "Its Canadian pride here," Toronto-born defender Ashtone Morgan said on the importance of the matches. "I think last year we had a sour taste in our mouth and were looking to bounce back this year, and looking to get the trophy." Dwayne De Rosario is tied for the tournament all-time lead in goals with four, and won back-to-back tournament MVP honours, in 2009 and 10. The 2009 victory was De Rosarios first playing with his hometown team in Toronto, after holding MLS jobs with the San Jose Earthquakes and Houston Dynamo. "For me it was a first championship coming back home, a championship for my city, a championship for TFC, and it was a special moment," De Rosario said. "And hopefully I can create another special moment tomorrow and win back that trophy for this club." Toronto is 7-1-2 all-time against the Impact in Canadian Championship action and are the favourites this season against a Montreal team that is struggling through a horrendous start to the season. TFC has four wins, four losses and one draw in MLS games, while Montreal is 1-6-4 and last in the league. Toronto coach Ryan Nelsen warned though that not only is Montreal a better team than this seasons results indicate, but standings and recent results dont mean much when a championship trophy is on the line. "Very dangerous team, very good team," Nelsen said of the Impact. "Theyre just having a little bit of a bad run at the moment. When you come to this competition, form doesnt really matter, it kind of goes out the window. Ive watched a lot of theiir games, and they have been unlucky in quite a few of them; theyve had opportunities to win the games, but it hasnt fallen their way.dddddddddddd You know the quality they have, theyll get it right." Toronto defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 at home and then 5-3 on penalty kicks in Vancouver to reach the final. The Impact battled back to beat second-division side FC Edmonton to earn their spot in the final. It was a confident TFC team that practised Wednesday morning at their training ground north of the city, after salvaging a 2-2 draw at Sporting Kansas City -- the defending league champions -- last Friday. Toronto managed a draw despite losing Caldwell to a red card in the 63rd minute. "Were very pleased with the result, not the performance particularly but at the end of the day were judged on points. . . Well take that in a very tough place to play," Caldwell said. "They were obviously a better team and we couldnt get anything going all night, and then with the sending off, and the penalty (awarded to Kansas City in the 84th minute for a Doneil Henry foul in the box). . . we felt even the 50-50 decisions were going against us. But well take the draw and move on. Excited for (Wednesday) night." Caldwells red card will keep him out of Saturdays MLS game against the visiting Columbus Crew, but hell be available Wednesday to a Toronto lineup that wont differ much from last Friday. Nelsen said midfielders Jonathan Osorio (hamstring) and Jackson Goncalves (concussion) wont play, while Luke Moore (groin) is questionable. Collen Warner, recently acquired in a trade with Montreal, is ineligible to play because hes cup-tied to the Impact. Nelsen was already in good spirits Wednesday but the coach brightened considerably when asked his thoughts on Queens Park Rangers promotion to the Premier League. "Brilliant. Absolutely fantastic," said Nelsen, who ended his playing career with QPR. The squad that Nelsen played two seasons for defeated Derby 1-0 last weekend to earn promotion. Bobby Zamora scored the decisive goal, pouncing on a defensive miscue by Derby in the 90th minute. "Football is a funny game . . . when youre down to 10 men, as long as you stay in the game, you generally get that one chance. It couldnt have been more obvious than that QPR game," Nelsen said. "Bobby took it brilliantly like he has for his whole career. I can imagine there were a few celebrations that night." Nelsen said he is still emotionally tied to QPR, as he is to every team hes played for, saying he still has good friends not only with that club but DC United, Blackburn, and Tottenham. "You get so emotionally involved because you go through so many highs and lows and people dont really understand how low the lows are and how high the highs are, that you become friends and you make friends," he said. "And when you do things for other people and they do things for you, that are unforgettable things that imprint on your life, and your memories, you obviously stay friends." The game can be seen live on Sportsnet 360 at 8pm et/5pm pt and will be joined in progress on TSN immediately following the Nets-Raptors game. Philadelphia lost Game 1 in New York to see its losing streak at MSG climb to nine games, but the Flyers were able to halt the slide and take Sundays meeting by a 4-2 score. The victory evened the series at 1-1 with the series shifting to the City of Brotherly Love for Games 3 and 4. The Flyers only mustered 15 shots on goal in Thursdays 4-1 loss, but came through with a much better offensive effort in Game 2. Philadelphia was still outshot by New York, 33-25, on Sunday, but the Flyers converted 2-of-3 power- play opportunities while only allowing the Rangers to score once on six chances with the man advantage. "Our power play had some great looks and they scored two and we didnt," Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault remarked. "At the end of the night that was the game." However, things did not look good for Philly in the early part of Game 2, as it fell behind 2-0 in the first half of the opening period before digging its way out of that hole. Luke Schenn netted the eventual game-winner 11:18 into the second period, scoring the third of four unanswered goals for the Flyers. Jakub Voracek, Jason Akeson and Wayne Simmonds each scored once, while Ray Emery, starting back-to-back games for the first time all season, stopped 31 shots for the Flyers, who won at MSG for the first time Feb. 20, 2011. "We just stuck with it and kept working and I think thats why we won the game," Voracek said. "After we got scored on, I think we were the better team.dddddddddddd" Emery got the nod in net again with No. 1 goaltender Steve Mason still recovering from an upper-body injury that has sidelined him since April 12. The situation in net remains unchanged for Game 3, with Emery as the starter and Cal Heeter serving as the backup. Martin St. Louis opened the scoring 4:08 into the game for New York and Benoit Pouliot added a power-play tally to stake the Rangers to a two-goal cushion at the 8:22 mark. Henrik Lundqvist allowed three goals on 24 shots for the Rangers. Schenns game-winner came at even strength with 8:42 left in the second period. Michael Raffl carried the disc through the neutral zone and across the blue line before touching it ahead to Adam Hall, who threw the puck on net from the low right side as he was checked to the ice. Lundqvist sticked away the initial opportunity, but the rebound squirted into the slot, where Schenn swatted it home with a backhand for a 3-2 lead. The score stayed the same until Simmonds notched an empty-net power-play goal with 26 seconds left. Now its New Yorks turn to prove it can win on the road. The Rangers lost both of their regular-season games in Philadelphia in 2013-14 and have dropped three straight and four of the last five meetings at Wells Fargo Center. "We have to step it up," said Rangers forward Mats Zuccarello. "Its 1-1 in games, so we have to win one down there. Its as easy as that." This is the first playoff series between these franchises since 1997. Tuesdays contest is the first postseason meeting in Philadelphia since the Flyers clinched the Eastern Conference championship with a 4-2 win over the Blueshirts on May 25, 1997. Philadelphia has won six of the 10 playoff series against the Rangers, including three straight. Game 4 of this series is scheduled for Friday night in Philly. "Ive been using a lot of top hand, kind of rolling over pitches I should stay through," Castellanos said. "Now, with my finger being hurt on my top hand, I have to use a lot more bottom hand. It helped me out tonight. I really didnt try to do too much." Castellanos homered and drove in four runs, and the Detroit Tigers scored six runs in the first inning en route to a 7-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night. Castellanos three-run homer capped Detroits early outburst. Max Scherzer (13-3) allowed a run and five hits in seven innings for the Tigers, who snapped a four-game losing streak. He struck out six and walked one. Detroit allowed seven runs in the seventh in an 11-4 loss to the White Sox on Tuesday night, but this time the big inning belonged to the Tigers. Detroit had scored six runs over its previous four games before scoring that many in the first inning off Hector Noesi. Noesi (5-8) allowed six runs and 10 hits in six innings. Martinez hit consecutive RBI singles, and Castellanos followed with an opposite-field homer to make it 6-0. Castellanos would add an RBI single in the seventh. Scherzer is unbeaten in his last seven starts. He faced the minimum 15 hitters through the first five innings -- the Tigers turned double plays after singles by Adam Eaton in the first and fourth. The game started after a 29-minute rain delay. SCHERZER STRONG: Since allowing 10 runs in a loss to Kansas City on June 17, Scherzer is 5-0 with a 2.08 ERA in seven starts. He became the first AL pitcher to reach 13 wins this year. "You have to ignore the scoreboard sometimes, and go out there and just pitch," Scherzer said. "The dumb philosophy is just -- Ill give them heaters -- youre up 6-0, you dont want to get beat. Fortunately, Ive had the luxury of pitching in these situations because of this offence that we have. Ive found that you need to throw your offspeed almost a little bit more, because their hitters are going up there gearing up for the fastball." SALVAGING SOMETHING: The Tigers were aggressive against Noesi, so even with that poor first inning, his pitch count wasnt all that high. He was able to help Chicago avoid a long outing from its bullpen. "After the first, I was just pitching mad," Noesi said. "I knew I didnt do my job and we were probably going to lose the game, so I was angry. I pitched a lot better after that inning, because I knew I couldnt afford to let them get any more runs." TRAINERS ROOM White Sox: Chicago announced before the game that reliever Nate Jones underwent Tommy John surgery Tuesday. Hes expected to need a 12-to-15 month recovery period. Tigers: Shortstop Eugenio Suarez, who left Tuesdays game with a back issue, said he was in pain when he would bend down to take groundballs. He was given the night off. VANCOUVER -- Daniel Sedin ended his longest pointless skid in a decade with a bang Friday night. He scored a goal and assisted on two by his twin brother Henrik as the Vancouver Canucks thumped the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-2. Daniel Sedins points were his first in seven games and helped the Canucks get their offence going after they suffered from a goal drought during a five-game losing skid. He had not had a similar six-game pointless streak since 2002-03. "Six games feels like forever," said Daniel Sedin. "its about the process, but in the end its about scoring." The Canucks (12-8-4)are fifth in the Pacific Division, while the Blue Jackets (8-12-3) lost for the fifth time in seven outings, good for seventh in the Metropolitan. Vancouvers goal total Friday matched its output during the losing skid. "It does a lot for the confidence for a lot of guys and for the team knowing we can score," said Daniel Sedin. Alex Edler, Zack Kassian, and Jeremy Welsh, with his first career NHL goal, also scored for the Canucks. Matt Calvert -- on the Blue Jackets first shot of the game -- and Artem Anisimov replied for the Blue Jackets. Columbus saw its fortunes change quickly after Daniel Sedin scored with 16 seconds left in the first period. "They scored first. We were pretty upbeat, but the tying goal was key," said Daniel Sedin. "Coming in here (to the dressing room) with a tie instead of being down was huge, especially where we were as a team. From that moment on, I thought we played really well." Kassian, Henrik Sedin and Edler iced the victory in the second by scoring two minutes and 10 seconds apart. Henrik Sedin and Edler scored just 16 seconds apart. "It happened fast," said Columbus coach Todd Richards. "They do a really good job of forcing you and pressuring you, and I think the first period kind of carried over into the second and then they were able to finish, and a couple of quick goals against a good team like that is tough to recover from." During their losing skid, the Canucks were held to one goal in four games and only managed two in the other. "We didnt play a terrible game, but we lost the game in a couple minutes there in the second period," said Columbus defenceman Jack Johnson. In a bid to get more scoring, Canucks coach John Tortorella split up the Sedins at times, and played them together at others. The moves worked as Vancouver outshot Columbus by a wide margin in the first 19 minutes and were finally rewarded with Daniels goal in the closing seconds of the first period. "Its a relief to get a win and to get rewarded with the forechecking that I thought was pretty good tonight," said Tortorella. The Canucks responded well after an embarrassing 3-2 loss to the lowly Florida Panthers three nights earlier. But Tortorella and Henrik Sedin contended that the only difference from recent outings was the fact the puck went in more often. "I dont think we played a whole lot better tonight than we have in the past three games, apart from the Florida game maybe," said Henrik Sedin. "But in the end, we got the goals people are standing and talking about a nice win instead of losing 2-1. Thats a huge difference for us." Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo only had to make 14 saves as Vancouver outshot Columbus 35-16. "I dont know what to tell you guys," Luongo said about letting in the first shot. "I knew it was going to be that type of game, they are not a team that throws a lot of pucks a the net. Unfortunately they scored right away, so thats even tougher to stay in the game and battle. But we did a good job, We got some goals and it was easier to relax after that." Blue Jackets goalie Sergei Bobrovsky recorded 29 saves in a losing cause, while the Canucks were blanked on five power plays and Columbus was denied on four man-advantage opportunities that generated few chances. "Its nice to win a game where you dont have to go down to the wire and grind one out," said Luongo. Notes: Bobrovsky stopped Jannik Hansen on a penalty shot in the third period after Fedor Tyutin pulled him down on a breakaway. a Both teams entered the game with no players on a scoring streak. a Unproductive Canucks winger David Booth was scratched for the second straight game. a Columbus centre Brandon Dubinsky was sent home due to a foot injury and missed his second consecutive game. "We know its a long season," Marrone said Monday, a day after the Bills improved to 2-0 with a 29-10 win over Miami. "To sit here and say, Oh, did we expect to have people give us credit? Not when you havent done anything for such a long period of time. I think we understand that." Marrone, of course, was referring to Buffalos 14-season playoff drought that stands as the NFLs longest active streak. This is also a team that has previously found ways of turning promising starts into losing finishes. That most recently happened in 2011, when the Bills opened with three consecutive wins and were 5-2 through October, before losing eight of their last nine. "Weve got to get better each week," said Marrone, who was already looking ahead to hosting the Chargers (1-1) on Sunday. "And really, all of our focus right now is the game thats next, San Diego." The Bills, among seven teams that opened Monday without a loss, still have plenty of room for improvement. Their red-zone offence is an area of concern after Buffalo scored one touchdown and settled for three field goals on five drives inside the Dolphins 20. "We have to focus on the red zone," said rookie receiver Sammy Watkins, who scored his first career touchdown against Miami on a 12-yard catch. "Its sad to just be kicking field goals. Thats something we have to fix." Added offensive guard Chris Williams: "How we played yesterday wont win for us later in the season." Buffalo began Monday tied with New Orleans with an NFL-leading 10 red-zone drives. And yet, Buffalo was tied for 17th with just three red-zone touchdowns. Marrone said the numbers are a little skewed due to circumstance. The Bills only needed a field goal in overtime to secure a season-opening 23-20 win over the Bears. Against Miami, they settled on running the ball to take ttime off the clock on their final two red-zone possessions in the fourth quarter.dddddddddddd Marrone, however, did acknowledge the Bills struggles during the first half, in which they came away with three field goals on three possessions that stalled inside the Dolphins 13. "I dont want to say anything negative but we had opportunities, and we werent able to get it," he said. At least Buffalo is getting solid play from its defence and special teams. The Bills gave up 80 yards rushing against Miami, a week after allowing only 86 against Chicago. Thats a big step for a defence that allowed less than 90 yards rushing only three times last season. Buffalo already has six sacks and has forced five turnovers (two fumbles, three interceptions). Special teams played a significant role against Miami. C.J. Spiller scored on a 102-yard kickoff return, Anthony Dixon blocked a punt, Randell Johnson recovered a muffed punt, and Dan Carpenter hit five of six field-goal attempts. On offence, Marrone is pleased with how the Bills have provided an immediate response following an opponents scoring drive. That was apparent against Miami in a back-and-forth third quarter that ended with Buffalo up 23-10. Spiller scored on the ensuing kickoff after Miami cut Buffalos lead to 9-3. When the Dolphins scored again on Mike Wallaces 7-yard touchdown catch, the Bills replied with a six-play, 77-yard drive capped by Watkins score. In all, Buffalo has trailed for a span of 4:43 this season. Quarterback EJ Manuel will take the wins, and focus on getting better. "Youre never going to be perfect, but the good thing is were still coming out with two wins versus two great teams," Manuel said. "As long as we win, Im happy." In evening his career record at 6-6, the second-year quarterback has been efficient after an inconsistent and injury-shortened rookie season. Hes gone 32 of 48 for 375 yards with two touchdowns, plus one rushing, and one interception. The Detroit Tigers remain the top team in the TSN.ca MLB Power Rankings, holding off the surging Los Angeles Dodgers. Detroit has been led, not surprisingly, by third baseman Miguel Cabrera, who has a 1.265 OPS in August and now has a career-best 1.141 OPS for the season, leading the major leagues. Cincinnati, with a 9-3 record in the last dozen games, has moved up from eight to five, while the Yankees are 7-3 in their last 10, moving up from 16 to 12. Further down the rankings, both the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim moved up, to 19 and 23, respectively. Going the wrong way, the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies -- all ranked in the lower third -- dropped in this weeks rankings. The series, now tied at a game apiece, doesnt resume until Saturday night. And what at first might have been looked at as an awkward break -- three full days off until the next game day -- is probably now welcomed by the Pacers. Indiana not only needs to get George cleared but also had starters Lance Stephenson, Roy Hibbert and David West all either limping or ailing in the final minutes of the Game 2 loss on Tuesday night. George was hurt with 6:52 left in the fourth quarter of Miamis Game 2 victory. He stole the ball from Heat guard Dwyane Wade, but could not keep control and wound up tumbling face-first to the court. Wade, also going for the ball, struck the back of Georges head with his left knee, then appeared to scrape the same area with his right leg as he also fell to the hardwood. George remained down for a few moments, but played the remainder of the game. He revealed afterward that he "blacked out" on the play, something that the Pacers say was not relayed to their medical staff. "George exhibited no symptoms of a concussion and, in response to questions from the Pacers medical staff, he denied dizziness, nausea, and issues with his vision," the Pacers said Wednesday. "He was also active and aware of his surroundings. As a result, the Indiana medical staff did not suspect a concussion." But after the "blacked out" comment, the Pacers evaluated George again Wednesday morning. "This case illustrates that concussion evaluation is an ongoing process and manifestations of the injury may not always present immediately," said NBA Concussion Program Director Dr. Jeffrey Kutcher, who will discuss Georges return-to-participation process with the Pacers team doctor before clearance is given for a return. Miami evened the series with an 87-83 win, after LeBron James and Wade controlled the fourth quarter for the Heat.ddddddddddddGeorge made a 3-pointer to give Indiana a 73-69 lead on the possession immediately preceding the one where he got tangled with Wade. The Heat answered with a 13-2 run over the next 5 minutes, James scoring nine of those points and Wade getting the other four. Just like that, the Heat grabbed the home-court edge in the series. "Theyre a tough bunch," Heat forward Chris Bosh said of the Pacers. "Very good team and were going to continue to challenge each other throughout the series. Its just now getting started. We have to take care of home court. First, we can really relax for a few days, and then get to it on Saturday." Both teams were off on Wednesday. "I just know Ive got warriors behind me, and were just going to take it to them," Stephenson said. "Weve just got to take our time. Its a long series. Weve just got to stay together." The NBAs concussion policy states that once a player is diagnosed, he needs to be "held out of all activity until he is symptom-free at rest" and until neurological signs return to normal. George will have to go through tests of increasing exertion before he gets cleared. "Its important to note that there is no timeframe to complete the protocol," the NBAs policy states. "Each injury and player is different and recovery time can vary in each case." Pacers coach Frank Vogel said he was told during the game that George was "good to go." There were plenty of other aches and pains for Indiana to deal with. West appeared to get poked in an eye in the fourth quarter, Hibbert was flexing his left leg after a tumble in the final seconds, and Stephenson went down at midcourt after colliding with Wade on the games final play, grabbing the area around his right knee. Stephenson got up, took the games last shot and then limped off without needing any on-court medical attention. "Its never pretty basketball in the Eastern Conference," James said. You dont know them. Not many people do. Days… Weeks… Months… Almost a year has gone by and still… you dont know them. The legendary Robert Montgomery Knight, aka, The General, one of the winningest coaches in college basketball history, strolls in to inspect the troops. He came to see them, to share his wisdom before they march into madness… to see who exactly this rag-tag bunch of players, not blue bloods… scrappers… fighters… winners, were. Coach Knight, the leader of the last college team to go undefeated and win an NCAA title, the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers, shows up at practice in late February to tell them to take it "one game at a time". He is a fan of how they play. "Play Angry". The 2013-2014 Wichita State mens basketball team does just that. But more importantly, plays hard, plays tough and plays together, leading to an NCAA-record 30-0 regular season mark under head coach Gregg Marshall. Saturday, March 1, 2014: Charles Koch Arena, Wichita, Kansas: Senior Night. The final matchup before the conference tourney and the opponent Missouri State is no easy out for the Shockers. This is also the final home game for two Canadian senior forwards, Chadrack Lufile, as well as his best friend, a young man whose last name is famous, not only in the state of Kansas, but on a couple continents, Nick Wiggins. Nick has a younger brother, Andrew who you may know, playing in the same state only two and half hours away, for a program so steeped in tradition, the inventor of basketball was the first head coach of the Kansas Jayhawks, fellow Canuck James Naismith. I got on the phone with Nick Wiggins and Chadrack Lufile post-practice this week to talk life in the shadows and possibly shocking the world. Did you guys know one another before signing at Wichita State? NW: Weve known one another since we were teenagers. CL: We actually went to the same junior college together at Vincennes in Indiana. NW: I signed first. I didnt force him to sign or anything… just told him it would be special for us to go together. Why Wichita State? CL: Nick had narrowed his choices down to Baylor and Wichita State. He talked about his visit, how they treated him, the ambitions of the coaches and players. There was just a feeling; a good feeling about it all. Once Nick decided, I was in, too. We had to take advantage of what looked like a great opportunity in front of us. NW: When we first got here, first couple years, we didnt play as much as wed have liked to but it was always about team. Still, it was tough at times, knowing you could help the team on the court more. CL: My Dads a minister. He has a huge influence on all that I do. Once, wed lost three straight, neither one of us was playing a lot and my Dad prayed for us. Not just us, but the team. I remember telling Nick about it. NW: Yeah, I mean we had 7-8 guys on this team last year who could score 20 in any game, but we share the ball. Thats how play. CL: And then we ended up in the Final Four. We believed... If you had to compare your game to any Wichita State great from the past, who would it be and why? NW: So many great players who have come through here. Id say Cleo Littleton. He was known for his defence and for being a great teammate. I think thats me. CL: X! Xavier McDaniel. He and Antoine Carr, another Shockers legend, came in to to see us last year and really instilled in us to "Play Angry". Thats our thing now: Play Angry. He (McDaniel) told me to box out hard, never let anyone get to the ball before I did, rebound strong, run the floor harder than my opponent, be versatile with my game. We emulate the guys who were here before us. They are Shockers for life! What do you say to the pundits who believe 30-0 is a function of you guys playing in the Missouri Valley Conference, the perceived lack in your strength of schedule and not because youre a great team? NW: Schedule us. Everyone talks KU (Kansas), but they wouldnt play us. We wanted to do it at a neutral site, but they didnt want it. Thats ok, people who dont believe mid-majors can compete with major D-1 schools havent really watched us play. They will find out soon enough. CL: Say what you want about our conference or the teams we beat. Just come play us. We feel like we can compete with anyone. We beat the #1 team in the country in Gonzaga in the tournament last year. Ohio State was #7, Pitt #20. Just play us. Do you think you should be ranked #1 in the country? CL: Honestly, I think we should be! NW: We dont really pay it much attention. It could be almost like a distraction. We dont look past anyone. You still gotta win. The team we play our last home game against, Missouri State, is tough. They had us down by like 17 with about 11 minutes to go in the game before we fought back and won. It was a war. Im sure they wont care that its Senior Night for us when we play them again. They wanna win, too! If Wichita State runs the table by winning your conference tourney, should you be a #1 seed for March Madness? NW: We proved all year we should be a #1 seed. I think the selection committee will do the right thing and give us that. We lost some great guys from last years team and still havent skipped a beat or lost a step. Coach Marshall has us prepared. This will be a special ride to go on with this group of guys. Dream Scenario: Clearly winning it all is the ultimate dream. But, if Wichita State had a chance to play Kansas in the final on April 7 in Dallas, why would it be that much sweeter? CL: Lets Go!!! Do you know how hype that would be?!? NW: If they seed us and Kansas in the same region 1-2, wow, the rivalry... My brother. I believe itll happen. State bragging rights. Man, I would have lifetime bragging rights in my house (laughs)!!! CL: Andrew (Wiggins) would come down to chill and hang with us. Id tell him "Youre not ready for us, Bro (laughs)!" Im no genius or anything, but I believe all of this. All the things that are happening with Wichita State are meant to be. I feel like well meet Kansas, God Willing. And God Is Good... Patrick Omameh Giants Jersey . With the final buzzer about to sound, he took his shot. "I got my feet squared up and it felt real good leaving my hands," Portlands point guard said. "Once I saw it on line, I said, Thats got a chance." Lillards shot fell and the Trail Blazers stunned the Houston Rockets 99-98 to take their playoff series in six games and advance to the Western Conference semifinals for the first time in 14 years. In the frenzied postgame celebration, Lillard took the public address microphone and shouted "Rip City!" The hometown crowd roared. Portland, making its first playoff appearance since 2011, had been eliminated in the first round in its last six trips, and hadnt advanced to the second round since 2000. "Its a great feeling," said fellow guard Wesley Matthews. "Im excited for Portland, of course excited for us. The grind of the season: Youre a competitor, you want to win, you want to play, you want to advance, you want to be a champion. ... Its unbelievable." Dwight Howard made four consecutive free throws to tie the game at 91 before making a bank shot that put Houston ahead with 3:04 to go. Robin Lopez scored on a tip shot to give the Blazers a 94-93 lead with 2:15 left, setting up a wild finish. Howards layup and foul shot put the Rockets back up 96-94 before Nicolas Batums fadeaway jumper tied it again with 39.9 seconds left. Chandler Parsons scored on a reverse layup with 0.9 seconds left to give Houston the lead. Lillard prevented the series from going back to Houston with his 3-pointer as time ran out. He finished with 25 points. The Trail Blazers said Lillard is the first player to make a buzzer-beating shot to win a playoff series since John Stocktons 3 that led Utah over Houston in 1997s Western Conference finals, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. "He made a hell of a shot," Rockets coach Kevin McHale said of Lillard. Portland will face the winner of the series between San Antonio and Dallas. The Mavericks forced a deciding Game 7 with a 113-111 victory over the Spurs on Friday night. There are five first-round playoff series that have gone to seven games.dddddddddddd LaMarcus Aldridge led the Blazers with 30 points and 13 rebounds. He averaged 29.8 points during the series. After losing the opening two games in Houston, then claiming one of a pair in Portland, the Rockets staved off elimination with a 108-98 victory on Wednesday night to narrow Portlands advantage in the series to 3-2. Howard had 22 points and 14 rebounds, and Jeremy Lin redeemed himself from a poor performance in Game 4 with 21 points off the bench. James Harden led the Rockets on Friday night with 34 points. Howard had 26 points and 11 rebounds as Houston -- which earned the nickname "Clutch City" back in the mid-1990s when the team won back-to-back NBA championships -- failed to become the ninth team to come back from a 3-1 deficit in a best-of-seven playoff series and advance. "It hurts," Howard said. "When you put everything youve got on the floor and somebody hits you with a dagger like that, its a tough pill to swallow." After Lillards 3, Howard went over to congratulate his friend and told him he was proud of him and to go win the title. Aldridge helped the Blazers steal the first two games in Houston, scoring 46 points in a 122-120 overtime Game 1 win, then 43 in a 112-105 victory. The Rockets claimed the first of two in Portland, 121-116 in overtime, led by Harden with 37 points. The series third OT game ended in a 123-120 Blazers win. Aldridge gave the Rockets credit for making the Blazers better. "We felt like they definitely helped us grow. Were so young in the playoffs, but they definitely helped us grow and we feel we should be better for the next round," Aldridge said. "Were happy now, but were not satisfied." NOTES: The Blazers honoured former coach Jack Ramsay, who led the team to its lone NBA championship in 1977, in a moving pregame ceremony. Ramsay died Monday after a long battle with cancer in Florida. ... A fan at the game held a sign reading: "Play like its 1977." ...
